Pen of the Day: Montblanc Heritage 1912

Montblanc Heritage 1912 fountain pen and Montblanc Pink ink

Montblanc Heritage 1912 with broad nib. I just inked this wonderful pen yesterday so I can bring it to a meet-up Sunday with some other Chicago-area fountain pen fans.

One of the other attendees has a Heritage 1912, too. But I think my Heritage 1912 is going to be much more badass.  Because mine is filled with Montblanc Pink.

Put on your sunglasses! No, just kidding. It’s actually a really nice ink. I don’t think it was ever popular online, perhaps because photos can make it look unpleasantly eye-searing.  But in real life, it’s a lovely, cheerful pink with nice shading.

And totally badass.

Is this my nicest pen?  It is the only one that people keep asking about.  It definitely cost the most.  And it is a dream to have it.  So I guess so.

I’m not sure a review of a limited edition pen from 1993 is in any way helpful, so I’ll just post some photos of the pen and write down a few thoughts about it.

At Least I Got to Play With It: the Montblanc M

1500x641_MON_545731_Black_Project_PR

So yesterday I got a chance, finally, to play with the Montblanc M designed by Marc Newson.  I really liked the design from photos, and am not in the least put off by a cartridge-only pen.

In person, it is smaller than I expected, and lighter, too, but also heavier, which I’ll try to explain.

I think it looks great.  It does seem small, though.  I liked the snowcap on the flattened end of the body — it’s a fresh take on the traditional design elements.  I like the unusual and interesting, but inviting, shape. The M is made of the same “precious resin” as Meisterstück pens, but it looks much more sleek and modern. The nib is small and fairly plain.  The cap has a magnetic closure, which made it easy to close.

Unfortunately, the M didn’t work for me in terms of feel in the hand. I thought the ridged metal section was comfortable to hold.  And the capped pen feels fairly lightweight.  But the M felt heavy when I uncapped it and held it in a writing position, which I found surprising at first.

It’s clearly because the section area has all the weight.  The section is metal, and the inner threads connecting the body and section are metal.  But everything else about the pen is light. Putting all the weight in the grip makes it feel like a much heavier pen when you’re writing with it.

For me, alas, the M isn’t a good fit, because I need a lightweight pen.  But if you do like writing with a heavy pen, the Montblanc M could be something to try.  It’s a pen that feels light when you carry it around, but writes with some heft.

Inks Chris Bought in 2015

IMG_0423_0011

I asked my friend Chris what inks she had purchased in 2015.  I was tickled, and relieved, that not only did she buy the same number of inks as I did, but she enjoyed some of the same brands. Here is her report.

I decided I had plenty of ink when 2015 began. Enough ink to last me another two lifetimes. I made a resolution that I wouldn’t buy more ink until I emptied at least one bottle. That resolution was never going to work. I’ve never completely emptied a bottle of ink in forty years, so why would I think I might do that now?

Looking Forward to 2016

DSC_7291

Boy, 2015 turned out to be a fun year.  What’s ahead for 2016?

I’ve got an amazing envelope chock full of samples from Konrad & Agnieszka at KWZ Ink.  I’ve swabbed them all.  They all look great, and  I’m super excited to use and report on these inks.  We’ve got iron gall and regular.  Some blues, reds and greens and interesting browns.  They all look fantastic.

A few people have asked for a post about the pen that’s pictured in the blog’s banner, a Montblanc Agatha Christie.  I can do that!  It’s just a killer pen.  No pun intended.

I’ve also got some Kaweco inks to review.  I’ve really enjoyed using these excellent inks.  I’d like to see more attention paid to small companies like KWZ and Kaweco that are putting out really great products at a great price.

I’ve got some more fun nib grinds to show off.  One of my favorite things is to try something new.  These are pretty great.

What I Bought in 2015: Pens

DSC_7183

I like to do an end-of-the-year “accounting” of the pens I bought, not to create the illusion that there’s any business-like veneer over my acquisitiveness, but more like an assessment, to see if I can learn anything.

This year was just fantastic.  I got great pens this year.  I did totally blow the budget in the last week.  But I’m still thrilled.
