Field Notes Dime Novel

The Field Notes Fall 2017 quarterly edition arrived yesterday. It is Dime Novel, a set of two slightly larger notebooks, which is modeled after inexpensive paperback “dime novels” sold between 1860 and 1930. The Field Notes Dime Novel is slightly larger than the usual Field Notes memo book, with 72 blank pages of thicker-than-normal paper. It’s beautifully done.

  1. I too was smitten by the “Dime Novel” edition, and was disappointed when I went on-line to pick up a few more and found that they’d been snapped up everywhere. It was good news when I heard Field Notes had taken the concept and brought it into their regular lineup as a somewhat toned down “Signatures” product. These have become my “go to” notebooks (the standard Field Notes in graph format is still my “pocket pencil calendar”). The paper is perfectly fountain pen friendly, and the size is just right to keep in my daily carry zip folder. I’ve yet to try their “Front Page” tablets, but they’re on my (ever-growing) “short list”…

  2. I’m a little late to the party, but this is a great review.

    I love love love the look of these notebooks but just can’t with the blank pages.

    These books got me illin
    but blank pages are a villain
    My wallet’s gonna be chillin
    until Field Notes is willin
    to use fp-friendly paper as a fill in

      Honestly it’s decently fountain pen friendly. A notch below Rhoda, Clairefontaine and Tomoe River. Or even Field Notes Lunacy, which is very FP friendly. It’s more average than that: but it will only feather with ink/pen combinations that tend to feather, and it’s very thick, so no showthrough.

I’ve never been a Field Notes fan… never quite liked the sizes, always preferred lined A5 with a nice, used-looking, leather cover; but this is a nice review, and those covers are great, and it would fit in my bag nicely, and the price is OK, and I’m going abroad soon, so it would be good to take with me… but it’s not lined, and it’s not very big… you’ve put me in a stationery dilemma.

    1. A stationery dilemma — I have that with the Hobonichi Techo every year, so I feel you.

      What if you order it and see if it works for you when it arrives? I would bet that you’ll find some use for it, even if you ultimately prefer something bigger or lined for the trip. Keep watching for my Pelikan Hubs report, because I have a photo in there of how a really talented artist is using his Dime Novel, which blew me away. (Sorry I’m so late with that — life has gotten in the way, alas.)

    1. Thank you! These are carried by many online pen stores and sold directly on the Field Notes website, and in various B&M gift and book stores. You can find B&m stores in your area on their website, too. 😁

  6. I must admit that I never owned a Field Notes cahier, but was given the opportunity to test some of my pens in some that were used by a friend of mine. They never appealed to me that much, but this one makes me really impatient to get it, there is some vintage charm about it I cannot resist. Your lovely review does not help that either! 😉

  8. As always I appreciate your reviews. This one was very well done. I wouldn’t mind having a set of these. I like them. I don’t care for blank pages though, otherwise it is great. Maybe in the future I will get a set, if they still have them later on.

    1. Thank you! I don’t like blank pages either, but I don’t think lines or grids would work with this design. Because it looks so right, I don’t mind blank pages here; in fact, I like blank pages here.

      I do wish I could draw. 🙂 This would be a nice tiny sketchbook to carry around.
