This post kicks off a new adventure for Fountain Pen Follies. Instead of carefully evaluating inks that I’m interested in, I’m going to do the opposite. I’m going to blindly pick an ink sample from my “miscellaneous samples” box, load it in a pen, and then see what I think of it.
I considered calling this experience Ink Roulette, or Random Inks, or even reclaiming the title Mystery Ink. But I’ve decided on Ink Dips. For two reasons. One, I’m just barely dipping into the ink. I won’t necessarily use it much, especially if I don’t like it. Two: it’s kind of a dippy idea. The reason these samples ended up in the box is because I either didn’t want to use them or didn’t like them.
But what the heck: it’s winter; try something new. Ink Dips begins.
Sailor Oku-Yama. This is an ink I’ve tried before and just didn’t like. So I was a little worried when I plucked it out of the box. But what a success for the first Ink Dip. I really enjoyed it this time.

I’ve not tried any GvFC inks (yet) but I do have this Oku yama loaded in a Pilot Decimo. Even with a typical Pilot fine nib it has a pleasing colour – not too bright that is – and is my current ‘correction pen ink’ of choice.

The chromatography is surprising and beautiful. I have been wanting to try all three of these inks. I am a fan of both GvFC and Sailor inks.
I love the name of this new inky experiment. 🙂

I have Oku-yama and adore it. I have also tried Grenade, and love it. I also have a 30 ml bottle of Diamine-Syrah, but it is darker. (I love it too) I thank you for the comparisons. You did a marvelous job on the review. The only reason I haven’t tried Bung Box-Sweet Potato Purple is the price. The maroon/burgundy inks are high on my list of ink colors that I love!

Thank you for the Ink Dip. Because I still have Sailor Jentle Grenade, I’ve never tried Oku-yama. Perhaps I should?

Since you like Grenade, I’d stick with it. When it runs out, try Oku-Yama. 🙂
If I were starting from scratch, I’d pick one of the KWZ Maroons, Garnet Red, or Oku-Yama if I wanted sheen. Or one of the host of Diamines, or Montblanc’s Shakespeare. 🙂
