Flurry of Fountain Pens: Pen Group Meetup

fountain pens in case

We had a wonderful group meetup yesterday in advance of the Chicago Pen Show, which is coming up in just a few weeks. We all brought some pens. This kind of meetup is great fun, because it’s not only a nice chance to spend time with nice people, but also a great way to see and try pens you’ve only heard about. Particularly if one of the attendees has a collection to die for, like my friend Dan. That magnificent thing above is his smallest pen case.

So that case holds a bunch of Pelikans, including I think six M800s and three M1000s, plus an 85th Anniversary Aurora and two Nakayas.  But that’s just one of his pen cases. Were there four or five cases? I lost count. Because, dazzled. His collection is like the best pen store ever, except nothing is for sale and everything is inked.

I tried one of his M1000s.  Now, the M800 is too heavy for me, so the M1000 should be a non-starter, being even larger. But I thought the nib on the M1000 was heavenly.  I tried a triple broad.  Which turned out to be not much broader than my Pelikan M605’s extra-fine nib.  (Joking, not joking. Owners of modern Pelikans will understand.)

  1. That M800 Grand Place rocked my socks, haha. I’m loving the brown-and-blue combos right now. And I have to say, that sounds like a wonderful afternoon!

    1. I know: when I first saw a Grand Place in person I was blown away. Such a beautiful pen. Luckily, the M800 size does not work for me at all. Because Pelikan has been crushing those lately: one after the other, each one nicer than the next.

      1. Yeah, I think M800 would be yuuge for me, too. It’s an international treaty sort of size lol, where they want the pen to be visible in the commemorative photo of the signing even though it’s wide-angle with like ten people in it 😛

  2. I’m officially jaleous now. 🙂 And not only the beautiful pens – I really would like to see if I can actually make a leather case like that.
I’d love to have the opportunity for a get together like that, but sadly, no one in my region ever seems to have the same hobbies as I do. It’s the bane of my existence.
I hope you will share some pictures of the Chicago Pen show, though. I’m really curious.

    1. I know how you feel Nadine, it’s the same for me! For a couple years in a row I posted on the pen forums about a get-together of pen people in my area, and nobody showed up! lol.

      1. Aaw, I’m so sorry! That really is sad.
I actually found another pen lover in my current company, by pure chance, the other day. Perhaps we’ll do mini-get-togethers… I cross my fingers that you’ll find someone in the area soon to share this with you. And until then, feel hugged 🙂
